Young Danny Baker is sent to live with his cruel uncle Matt Hodgkins, after a tragic auto accident claims the lives of his parents. En route to his uncle's farm he adopts Shep, an abandoned German Shepherd, and the two become fast friends. When Danny arrives, he realizes that both he and Shep are unwanted. After months of brutal treatment at the hands of his uncle, Danny and Shep run away. On the road, they befriend a homeless Spanish-American War veteran, Carter J. Latham, and the three begin to build a new life in the woods.
