Kittenish teens Patti (Jane Powell) and Melba (Debbie Reynolds) turn a 1900s family vacation in the Catskills into Two Weeks with Love, "a bright entertainment that may come as a surprise to those who think there is nothing new under the musical sun" (The Hollywood Reporter). Patti is fluttery over a suave older man (Ricardo Montalban) and thinks romance will bloom if her disapproving parents let her wear...a corset! With that longed-for garment, 18-year-old Patti is sure she'll look like a more mature woman. Meanwhile, Melba stalks a local boy (Carleton Carpenter) with lovestruck determination. In a sensational showstopper, Reynolds and Carpenter tear into a version of "Aba Daba Honeymoon," so frisky and charming it became a smash-hit record. Busby Berkeley staged all the numbers, including "Row, Row, Row" and a dream sequence that has corseted Powell wowing Montalban with, of all things, an aria from The Chocolate Soldier. Aba daba, what a delight!

    Powell and Reynolds in fine form

    1950's "Two Weeks with Love" gives the viewer a charming, nostalgic glimpse into a world long since vanished, detailing a family's two-week summer holiday in the Catskills. Perhaps the world depicted in this picture never actually existed---but wouldn't it be lovely if it had?

    Jane Powell is her usual bubbly self, ably performing a number of period tunes. The real standout in the supporting cast is 18-year-old Debbie Reynolds in one of her earliest pictures, who is given a couple of excellent numbers as well. Her character is so likeable, and she already displays that indefinable certain "something," a definite charisma. It's not difficult to see that she was going to be a major musical star.

    So, a bit of fluff overall, but a most enjoyable one. Recommended! Chief among the extras is an interview Robert Osborne conducted with Jane Powell for TCM; I would guess this dates from the late 1990s. It's quite interesting, and Jane is in fine form.

    So much fun and certainly underrated. Gorgeous restoration and transfer just like every Warner Archive disc!

    Underrated MGM Musical

    Lesser know MGM musical that doesn't get much love or attention. Movie stars Jane Powell as a teenager ready to grow and find love while vacationing in the Catskills with her family. Cast includes Debbie Reynolds, Ricardo Montalban, Ann Harding, Louis Calhern and Carleton Carpenter.

    Also enjoyed the bonus documentary Reel Memories that aired on TCM years ago where Jane Powell talked about her movie career.

    Well done Warner Archive!
